Just because you choose to experience the wonders of the great outdoors and the thrills, spills and navigational headaches of a campervan holiday, it doesn’t mean you can’t go clubbing. Read on for one of the best options to allow you to enjoy cheap clubbing holidays while still taking pleasure from your campervan comforts.
While Ibiza is the undisputed centre of the universe when it comes to serious clubbing holidays, if you’re driving your campervan there aren’t too many options once you arrive. The only campsite near the bar and clubbing hub of San Antonio doesn’t allow campervans (you can stay in a tent or a bungalow however). Add to that the unfortunate fact that the prices in general and in clubs in particular are higher than ever and you would be forgiven for looking elsewhere to get your clubbing fix. But where exactly?
Well, Krakow in Poland is where. It is the ancient Polish capital, so there is plenty of picturesque architecture and culture (for when you’re staggering home at sunrise).
The city also hosts around 120,000 students, so there is a cosmopolitan, free and easy vibe to the place. Oh, and there are over 120 pubs and clubs to explore.
Krakow’s club scene caters for all tastes from deep house to drum and bass, techno to soul, but one of the best has to be Klub Ministerstwo. Tucked away down a backstreet it’s easy to miss, but look out for the scarlet-lit staircase that leads to the guts of the venue. Once inside you will find a young and elegant crowd dancing under brick-walled arches to hip hop, R‘n’B, funky house, and drum and bass (depending on the night), as well as a few cool kids supping reasonably priced cocktails.
Another decent option is Coco Music Club, which is more refined than Ministerstwo without being overly pretentious.
A little more mainstream than some of the more serious clubs (Prozak, for example), there’s plenty of fun to be had between these – very swish – walls.
Or if you fancy something a little more intense, make your way to Art Klub Bledne Kolo (which means ‘vicious circle’ apparently) which hosts electro parties that kick on through till morning and attract what can be easily described as an eclectic mix of clientele. But really there are so many decent clubs and bars around that if you have a few nights there you will think Christmas, New Year and Easter have all come at once.
The best thing of all is that Poland is still cheap, relative to London, Paris or Berlin, and especially compared with the super clubs of Ibiza. With over 5 Zloty to the Pound (at the time of writing), you can get plenty of bang for your buck when you bear in mind a beer costs around 6-8 Zloty and entrance to clubs is very affordable and once in drinks promotions will help stretch your budget even further.
Where to stay near Krakow in your campervan?
The good news is that camping is cheap and plentiful in Poland in general, and there are two good sites where you can stay in your campervan within 4 km of the Krakow Old Town. The first, Clepardia Campsite, is north-west of the City and 20 Zloty per person per night (25 in high season) with an extra 20 Zloty for your campervan. So two people sharing in a campervan would cost about £12.00 in total per night. You get use of electricity, as well as the hot showers, kitchens and free-to-use washing machines (to clean that sweaty club wear). There is a bus stop with regular buses to the city centre located 200 metres away, while a taxi back should cost no more than 50 Zloty.
The second option is Camping Smok, which is situated on a hill overlooking the Vistula River and the Wolski forest. They have similar facilities as Clepardia Campsite, and the prices are basically the same too, so really just take your pick as there’s not much between them.
If driving from England, the distance (depending on your starting point) will be not much more than 1000 miles, and your ferry options are either Dover to Calais if starting in the south, or for you northerners Hull to Rotterdam. You could break up the journey with a night stopover in the Netherlands or Germany, but if you are sharing the driving it’s not too bad to just push on through once you hit the European mainland, after all you won’t be sleeping much once you hit the clubs.
So if you’re looking for cheap clubbing holidays, banish the Balearics and crack on to Krakow.
